Things to Do in Mendota Heights This Summer, Mapped Out

If you live here, you already know the shape of a Mendota Heights summer. What you may not have noticed is how much of it is imported. The concerts happen at a city park you can bike to. The three-day festival happens at another one. The trail everyone walks belongs to Dakota County. The nature center is run out of West St. Paul. Even the summer parade you drift to on July 10 is technically in Mendota, not Mendota Heights. Residents stitch the season together across four or five jurisdictions without thinking about it, which is why the calendar rewards people who plan a few weekends ahead instead of checking one city website and calling it done.

Here is the version of the summer that actually matters between now and Labor Day.

The August pinch point

The biggest thing on the local calendar is Heights Fest, and it is closer than it feels. The community festival spans three days from August 7 through August 9, 2026, with most events held at Mendakota Park at 2111 Dodd Road, including a food truck festival, movie night and kids festival.

The Friday night structure is the piece worth knowing if you have kids or want to avoid the peak crush. Friday evening runs 4:30 to 10 p.m. and is free, with food truck vendors and yard games from 4 to 8:30, a Kids Dance DJ from 5 to 5:45, The Patience Band from 6:30 to 8, and a Movie in the Park from 8:30 to 10. If you show up at 7, you have missed the food truck lines being short and you are catching the band mid-set.

Saturday layers on more. There is a family-style afternoon in the park with inflatables, balloon artists and a foam pit party from noon to 2, free. The Sunday programming is smaller and more specific, and it is the part most people skip because it requires signing up in advance. All require pre-registration: a Mini & Me Golf Tournament for ages 5 and up with an adult on August 9 at 2 p.m., free, and a Fishing Derby for ages 3 to 13 with an adult on the same weekend, free. There is also an Oheyawahe guided tour of the Dakota sacred space on the National Register of Historic Places on August 10 at 3 p.m., which is the kind of thing residents drive past for years without ever booking.

Free concerts, and which weeks are actually worth showing up

Music in the Park runs Wednesdays from May through early September at Market Square Park. It is the same format every year, but the lineup changes, and 2026 has more range in it than most seasons.

Date Act Style
July 8 Timbre Junction Bluegrass
July 22 Buster Phelan Local classic rock
August 5 Dirty Shorts NOLA-style brass band
August 19 The Working Stiffs —
September 2 Lilianna Rindal with Lili Horizon —

Concerts run 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Market Square Park, 720 Main Street, family-friendly, outdoor, free, and residents are told to bring a lawn chair or blanket for seating. The August 5 date is the one to circle. A New Orleans-style brass band in a Minnesota suburb park is not the default draw at a municipal concert series, and it is on a Wednesday two days before Heights Fest opens across town. Those two events together are effectively the peak of the local summer.

If you cannot make a Wednesday, Mendota Days runs the weekend before all this, on the other side of the river. The Mendota community celebrates July 10 to 11, 2026 with a parade, live music, car show, historic site tours, a bags tournament, food trucks, bounce houses and a treasure hunt, a tradition since 1969. Different city, ten-minute drive, same summer.

The trail question, and the closure most people have not caught

Big Rivers Regional Trail is the walk residents default to, and there is a piece of current news about it that has not spread widely.

The Lone Oak Trailhead, the parking lot and a short segment of the nearby trail is closed for bridge construction.

The Big Rivers Trailhead itself is still open at 1498 Mendota Heights Road, free admission, daily 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. That is the parking lot with restrooms and the scenic overlook of the Minnesota and Mississippi confluence. If you were used to jumping on at Lone Oak, plan to start from the main trailhead instead, or from the Lilydale end in Saint Paul.

For a different walk on the same afternoon, the Dodge Nature Center property inside Mendota Heights runs a different flavor. The trails go through prairies, woodlands and wetlands, farm animals and local wildlife are on site, and trails are free to explore every day from sunrise to sunset. AllTrails clocks the Dodge Nature Center Loop at 1.7 miles and 30 to 60 minutes, which is the right shape for a Sunday morning that has other plans attached to it.

Also worth knowing: from the small city of Mendota next door, there is access to 10 miles of unpaved riverside trails on the Dakota County side of the river, and the Mendota Trail is open for mountain biking, hiking or snowshoeing. Most residents do not realize the Fort Snelling trail system connects on foot from D Street. Permits are not needed to access the park on foot from Mendota.

What is happening to the food scene

The Copperfield has been the anchor of the local dining conversation for a few years now, and the reason to bring it up in 2026 is that the ownership group is moving on it.

Hightop Hospitality's Copperfield, the neighborhood diner in Mendota Heights, is expanding into Rosemount, the brand's first move beyond its original Twin Cities outpost and a full-service, all-day restaurant concept coming into the suburb's retail mix. Details on the exact Rosemount address and a firm opening date are still under wraps, and the company has not yet shared a target opening month or an exact street address.

The practical read for a resident: the Mendota Heights location at 735 Maple Street stays as the flagship, and the second location will not siphon the operators' attention until it opens. In 2026 the restaurant took Gold Best Breakfast, Gold Best Pancakes, Silver Best Casual Restaurant, Bronze Best Food & Drink Customer Service and Gold Best Brunch at the Minnesota's Best awards. The awards are a proxy for the crowds. Saturday brunch is not a walk-in decision.

For the rest of the local list, Yelp's June 2026 top-ten reads Copperfield, Copper & Rye, Lucky's 13 Pub, FoodSmith Bistro Pub, Hazelwood Food and Drinks, Ze's Diner, Soul Lao, Estelle, Potsticker and Altera. That is a wider range than the town had five years ago, and it is enough that a resident does not need to leave city limits for a Saturday night reservation.

One weekend, mapped

If you want the compressed version of everything above, this is what August 7 through 9 can look like without driving more than ten minutes at a stretch:

  • Friday, 5 p.m. Heights Fest at Mendakota Park. Get food from a truck before the 6:30 band starts.
  • Friday, 8:30 p.m. Stay for the movie in the park, or leave with kids and come back Saturday.
  • Saturday morning. Walk the Dodge Nature Center Loop from the Lily property, or bike the Big Rivers Trail from the 1498 Mendota Heights Road trailhead. Skip Lone Oak until the bridge work wraps.
  • Saturday, noon to 2 p.m. Heights Fest kids programming at Mendakota, including the foam pit.
  • Sunday, 2 p.m. Mini & Me Golf at the Par 3 Community Course, if you pre-registered.
  • Sunday, 3 p.m. Oheyawahe tour if you did not.

That is roughly the entire summer's marquee weekend, and none of it is more than a five-minute drive from anywhere in the city.
